Sometimes you just need a do-over. The third article I ever wrote for my blog was for a hike to Kings Bluff Falls. I did that hike years before I ever knew I would have an outdoors blog. I didn’t research the hike or even really know what to expect. We just showed up and hiked to the falls and back, not even knowing what else was out there. That was the case for several of my early articles, but this one only had a few pictures and no video! There’s so much more to hiking the Kings Bluff Loop than I covered the first time. So I think this hike deserves a do-over. After that first visit, I made a return trip there and hiked the Pedestal Rocks Loop. Both hikes are really one big loop, but you can hike them separately. The rock formations at Pedestal Rocks are amazing. It wasnR...
Coming into 2021, I had a pretty long list of hikes to do in the southern Ozarks’ Lost Corner area. But one hike that was not on my list was the creekside hike to Green Grotto Falls. Nope, I was going to follow the main trail and miss some cool waterfalls upstream from Green Grotto. That is until I met up with my friend Gez Rogers, who knew a great creekside route to Green Grotto and several others. We did two hikes that day, and Green Grotto was our afternoon hike. In case you missed it, Part One of this hiking day was a creekside hike to Brushy Grotto Falls that morning. Gez really knows the Lost Corner area well. So I was stoked to team up with him and his pals Super Leeds and Travis Howk for this hike. As I mentioned in Part One, Gez Rogers is the creator of the Waterfalls in Ark...
Lost Corner is an area I first visited in early 2021 with a hike to Schoolhouse Falls. When researching that one I learned there are a TON of waterfalls in the wilderness around Lost Corner. It’s another one of those places where most of the hikes will show you multiple waterfalls on a single hike. This January, after a good rain, I made my third visit to Lost Corner for a full day of waterfall hikes. The first one of the day was a creekside hike to Brushy Grotto Falls. For this hike, I teamed up with Gez Rogers, the creator of the Waterfalls in Arkansas map. This is an awesome map that has recently surpassed over 125K views! It’s super helpful, so if you your’e not using it, you should be! Anyway, we had discussed teaming up on a hike for nearly a year. Lost Corner hikes...
*In Memory of Rick Henry.* Rick, you may not have known most of your readers, but we feel like we knew you. Thank you for leading us to so many beautiful places. When it comes to waterfall hiking, it’s always great to get your money’s worth with multiple falls on a single hike. Most of the waterfall hikes in the Ozarks offer this opportunity, although some make it easier than others. My recent Christmas hike to Compton’s Double Falls and Amber Falls is a great example. Much like the Magnolia Falls hike, this one has several falls, each one just around the bend from the next. As long as there is water, you get to see five waterfalls on this hike. And you can continue down Whitaker Creek to see several more (Wild Burro, Beagle Point, and other smaller falls). This is a...
Waterfall season got a late start this year, but it is finally underway. I have been on a roll lately, checking hikes off my list that have been tugging at me for years. And once the steady rains hit the Natural State, I got to start checking off some more. At the top of my list this waterfall season was the Hike to Thunder Canyon Falls. I actually tried to do this one last Winter. But I had not done my homework and was unprepared for creek crossings, or even reaching the trailhead. Since then I’ve had trouble getting back there after the right amount of rain. That is until December, 2021. When the rains finally hit, I was ready for this one. I enjoy all of the waterfalls that I hike to. But there is something different about Thunder Canyon. To me, there’s a certain mystique ab...
I find something to enjoy about every hike that I do. But some hikes are better than others. And then there are the ones that really stand out from the rest. Those are usually the ones where I spend the whole time thinking “how am I just now visiting this place?!”. The hike to Buzzards Roost is the latest one that really blew me away. Maybe it’s because I geek out a little bit over crazy rock formations (see video below), and this hike is full of them. This geological wonderland has two natural bridges and a huge rock outcropping/vista full of caves and tunnels. I would compare it to the Bear Cave Trail area at Petit Jean State Park, but more impressive. It also didn’t hurt that we caught this area on the last weekend of peak leaf season this fall. This hike has a c...
A recent camping trip this Fall unexpectedly led us to a new group of waterfalls I had not visited before. I say unexpectedly because our original camping destination (Cove Lake) was full when we arrived. I had Cove Lake area hikes planned out and everything! Altering our plans on the fly, we opted to spend the weekend at Longpool Campground near Dover. I’ve stayed at this campground and hiked to Longpool Falls many times. But until this trip, I had never made the hike to Rough Falls just down the road at Rough Hollow. If you have ever been to Longpool Campground, you know there is no cell service there. Luckily, I had already spent a little time researching Rough Hollow on the Waterfalls in Arkansas map. There are quite a few waterfalls in this hollow that you can see in one hike. I...
There are many hikes in Arkansas that are better at certain times than others. And when you can’t do those, you need a backup plan. I have a list of hikes that I have been saving for times when rivers and waterfalls are dry. These are my “Plan B” hikes. Not because they are not good hikes, but because they can be done at any time. Hikes like Centerpoint/Goat Trail to Big Bluff or the Mt. Nebo Rim Trail for example. The latest Plan B hike I’ve checked off my list was a visit to Round Top Mountain hiking trails. I have passed by Round Top Mountain dozens of times on my way to Jasper or the Upper Buffalo River area. This Fall I finally had a good chance to stop in and hike it. I had been out waterfall hunting up Hwy 7 right after a rain. And after striking out on...
It seems like every Arkansas Summer has a stretch of drought sometime between July and September. When the float rivers dry up and waterfall hikes become… well, just hikes. This summer (2021) has been especially dry and hot, making it difficult to get out and do these things. So what can you do when you just gotta get out there? How about a vista hike? Well that’s exactly what I did one Sunday in August. I hiked the Riverview Trail at Tyler Bend Recreation Area on the Buffalo River. There are a lot of high bluffs along the Buffalo River with trails leading to some great views. I like to hit those trails this time of year. Last Summer I did the most popular, Centerpoint/Goat Trail to Big Bluff near Compton. So this time I chose something closer to the Lower Buffalo. There a...
A couple of weeks ago I wrote about a recent visit to Mountain View, AR and all the fun things to do around there. Our first stop that day was at Loco Ropes for some ziplining and ropes adventures. You can check out our visit to Loco Ropes here. The second half of our day would take us into the Sylamore Wilderness for a hike to Steele Falls. It’s actually the Sylamore District of the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest. But right or wrong, I just call it the Sylamore Wilderness. Before we would get to Steele Falls though, we had a few other stops to make. First was lunch at Wing Shack in Mountain View (great burgers!). Then we made a quick stop at Blanchard Springs to check out Mirror Lake Falls. From there, we made our way to the area of Fifty-Six and a stop at the beautiful Gunner Po...
Here we are in June and it’s still raining like it’s April. Floating the rivers is a little unpredictable right now. But one thing you can rely on is that the waterfall hiking is excellent pretty much every weekend. Earlier this spring I ventured into the hills northwest of Batson to visit Bingham Hollow Falls. Along the way, I stoppled to make the short hike to Mineral Springs Falls. I was actually on my way to a weekend camping and floating trip on the Mulberry River. That float ended up cancelled due to some unexpected cold and windy weather. So the waterfall hike to Mineral Springs Falls and later to Bingham Hollow wound up as the highlight of the weekend. Bingham Hollow was as great as I thought it would be. But Mineral Springs Falls was much more than I expected, and a ni...
I have written several articles now about waterfalls that I have missed while hiking to others close by. My research is getting better, so hopefully I won’t keep missing them. But I recently visited two more waterfalls you can easily combine with other waterfall hikes in the Falling Water Creek area. Splashdown Falls and Intersection Falls are two that are located off Falling Water Rd near several popular waterfalls. If you ever hike to Terry Keefe Falls, you should definitely add Splashdown Falls to the same hike. There are a lot waterfalls in this area such as Six Finger Falls and Fuzzy Butt Falls, Horsetail Falls, Terry Keefe Falls, and others. If you ever stop to see ANY of the waterfalls along Falling Water Rd, Intersection Falls is another quick and easy stop you can add. I had...
